EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS PROGRAM

In Australia, the 1995 National Nutrition Survey showed that some 56% of the adult population (18 years and over) were overweight, with 19% of these classified as obese.  The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported in it’s 2001 Australian Social Trends data that 54.4% of males aged over 18 years and 38.2% of females aged over 18 years are overweight or obese.  Australia is now being ranked as one of the fattest developed nations, closely following USA rates.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports: “Absences from work accounted for around 3.8 million days lost from work. Although the proportion of females taking days away from work was higher than that for males (16% and 13% respectively), more male days were lost (2.0 million) than female days (1.8 million).”

HEALTH CONSEQUENCES OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY

The health problems and consequences of obesity are many and varied, including musculo-skeletal problems, cardiovascular disease, some cancers, sleep apnoea, breathlessness, social isolation/depression, daytime sleepiness/fatigue, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension to name a few.

Many of these are often preventable through a healthy and active lifestyle. In particular, obesity is strongly linked to type 2 diabetes, identified as one of the six National Health Priority Areas and place an enormous burden on individuals, families and society as a whole.

Employees who take days off work due to health related problems can lead to a reduction in productivity and a stressful working environment.  More often, other employees are required to adopt the extra workload or adjust their roster system to accommodate sick colleagues.
